I A few days before the opening of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, millions of
Chinese citizens are stuck in lockdown. Strict quarantine and other measures to prevent COVID-19 from spreading, has not prevented the omicron variant from being detected in the country. Despite the fear and worry of an outbreak, it can be said that there is also a feeling of pleasant anticipation for the games.
II In Hassakeh, Syria, Kurdish led forces (SDF) are slowly regaining control over Gwairan
prison which had been seized by Islamic State militants just a few weeks earlier. Hundreds of kidnapped children are still in danger of being killed as some are being used as human shields by the ISIL fighters.
III Iquique, Chile, violent protesters are tearing down a Venezuelan migrant camp during a demonstration against illegal immigration and criminality. Remnants of the camp are being thrown onto a truck and removed from the area.
IV According to different food security assessments, either 40% or 83% of the people in Tigray are “food insecure”. Families are being forced to ration their food stocks of predominantly cereals, by reducing portion sizes and the number of meals per day in order to stretch the remaining food that is available.
V The tropical storm Ana is making landfall in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi. Torrential rain and flooding are threatening to destroy thousands of homes as well as the lives of tens of thousands of people. So far, several dozen people and countless livestock have already been reported as killed or missing in the flooding.
VI Numerous social media videos are showing Russian troops along the border of Ukraine in Russia and Belarus. Fears and speculations about an impending invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces continue to rise.
